Youth Outreach Coordinator’s Story
The 2014 CADCA Conference was incredible. Traveling to Washington D.C. for the first time was an exciting experience all in itself, but for what was to come was the most exciting part. It was incredible to be able to hear the president of CADCA speak on the behalf of Coalitions all over the world. The theme of the conference of 2014 was “WE ARE THE CHANGE, WE ARE CADCA” which has been my motto ever since. If you want to see a change, be the change.
The youth sector was a very powerful group of students who wish to have healthier peers, and communities. Being able to connect and brainstorm ideas with these young people who have the same vision was very unique and special. We had the opportunity to learn some activities and strategies in which we could bring back to our community to further better the lives of our young people. Our youth sector had put on a performance for CADCA incorporating what we had done in our communities in a short skit. Being nervous as ever, I decided it was important for me to highlight what our community was doing with the Outreach Team in how we are promoting the positive, and dispelling the myths and misperceptions of youth. Boy, was that an experience.
And lastly, being able to shake the hand of Patrick Kennedy, and listen to his journey of substance abuse and all he has done around substance abuse inspired me to continue to make a change in my community.
CADCA was an experience I will never forget, and I am forever grateful I was able to attend.
